Support your Research with Aviary!

Aviary is the University of Alberta Library’s platform for publishing, preserving, and providing access to audiovisual research and creative outputs. Whether you create scholarly podcasts, oral histories, interviews, performances, event recordings, or other time-based media, Aviary offers a flexible environment for organizing, describing, and sharing your materials with research collaborators and the public.

Join Digital Curation Librarian Sean Luyk for an overview of Aviary’s core features, including media deposit, time-based indexing, transcript and metadata creation, access control, and long-term preservation support. This session will highlight how faculty can partner with the Library to develop sustainable workflows for managing audiovisual content, ensure ethical and appropriate access to sensitive materials, and integrate sound and video into your research and knowledge mobilization activities.

About the Instructor:

Sean Luyk is a Digital Curation Librarian at the University of Alberta Library, where he manages Aviary, an audiovisual digital curation platform. In this role, he supports faculty in developing, managing, and preserving audio and video materials across a wide range of disciplines and research programs. Sean provides expertise in metadata creation, rights and access management, preservation planning, and ethical approaches to working with culturally sensitive or community-based media.

He is a Co-Investigator on three audiovisual research projects: SpokenWeb, Radio/Archive: Broadcasting Literature and Cultures of Literary Sound, and AVAnnotate. These projects advance new methods for studying, curating, and sharing audiovisual media for research and scholarship. Sean also coordinates the Sounds of Research competition and regularly teaches workshops on topics such as podcasting, recording, editing, and digital audio production.
