Aztec, Mixtec, and Mayan Pictorial Manuscripts

Aztec, Mixtec, and Mayan Pictorial Manuscripts

Instructor: Ann De León (Modern Languages and Cultural Studies Department)

Description: Following a general introduction to some of the manuscript materials housed in Bruce Peel Special Collections, this workshop will introduce students to a wide range of beautiful and fascinating Mexican Indigenous pictorial manuscripts (or "codices"), starting with the oldest books produced in the Americas: a handful of surviving Mayan codices. Moving from Aztec and Mixtec pre-Columbian and Colonial codices to 19th-century reproductions, and on to post-Modern codices (or artist's books); students will have the opportunity to learn how these codices were made, what kinds of content they contain, some of their fascinating histories, and what we can learn from them today.

This online workshop is open to the University of Alberta community.
