An Introduction to Rare Materials Cataloguing

An Introduction to Rare Materials Cataloguing

Instructor: Brian Stearns (U of A Library).

Description: Library catalogues are the gateway to the rich holdings available in special collections libraries, but many users are not aware of how catalogue records are created and what information is (and is not) recorded in them. This session will provide an introduction to cataloguing for special collections researchers and answer common questions about the catalogue, such as how to find resources held locally or in other institutions, how to find a specific manifestation of a work that exists in many editions, and how best to find specific types of resources. The session will be illustrated with numerous examples from Bruce Peel Special Collections, highlighting many challenging and exciting items that can be found in the catalogue!

This in-person workshop is open to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 8 participants.
