Caring for Family Photographs
Instructor: Carolyn Morgan and Sarah Severson (Bruce Peel Special Collections).
Description: Photographic prints can spark memories and stories by providing us with a visual reminder of times past. Whether stored in albums, scrapbooks, or loose—possibly framed and sitting on shelves or hanging on walls—they are a treasured part of family archival collections. Have you ever thought about how you are storing and handling your photographs? Is it time for a storage upgrade? Using examples from the Peel library collection, we will briefly discuss the evolution of photographs to understand their deterioration concerns. We will also touch on best practices for digitizing photographs and managing digital images, including how to store and describe them to preserve your visual memories for future generations.
This in-person workshop is open to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 8 participants.
