Exploring the Diversities of the Book Form: Artists' Books

Description: At the most basic level, artists’ books are works of art that are dependent upon the book structure to articulate their content. Often made or conceived by artists, they assume many different forms and shapes reflecting a range of processes and techniques, both traditional and experimental. Whether the content is visually or linguistically based (often both), artists’ books employ elements of sequence, repetition, juxtaposition, and duration to create many exciting possibilities within narrative, media, and meaning, specific to the medium. This workshop will examine and reflect on these elements in a variety of works from the collection to develop an approach for participants to understand and engage with artists’ books.
This in-person workshop is open to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 8 participants.
