Research Communications: Data Visualization

Humans have evolved to be adept visual pattern matchers. From the arts to the sciences, from the social sciences to journalism and literary studies, data visualization techniques attempt to make visual sense out of the chaotic world that surrounds us. This workshop experiments with some simple data visualization techniques and explores how data visualization can be used to enhance and extend our research and teaching. If you want to experiment with some hands-on data, bring a laptop with a spreadsheet application.

Completion of this workshop can contribute to a partial requirement of The University of Alberta Professional Development program by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS). Information on how attendance will be recorded will be discussed in the workshop.

About the Instructor: Dr. Harvey Quamen teaches in both the MA program in Digital Humanities and the Department of English. He regularly teaches courses on Python, Data Visualization, and SQL Databases. He is also currently the Academic Director of the Digital Scholarship Centre.
