Terracotta True Scale: Spatial Literacies, Deep Time and Maps.
All maps lie, and therein lays a truth. Commencing with scale (an honest ratio), the workshop will investigate spatial literacies through the use of printed maps. Embedding them within deep-time, and investigating the alchemy of projections that transform spheres into flat earths, the distortions of distance and direction, colours and contours, layers and legends, and connecting cartographic symbols to the colonial systems they represent. Borrowing from Henri Lefebvre's Production of Space, Jacques Derrida’s Hauntology, Sven Lindqvist's Dig Where You Stand and Gabrielle Hecht’s Interscalar Vehicles the aim of the workshop will be to enhance one’s spatial habit of mind.
This workshop will be held on the 4th floor of Cameron Library in Room 4-20 beside the Map Collection. If you have questions about this workshop, please email library.teachingandlearning@ualberta.ca.
