Secrets to Success in Archival Research

Secrets to Success in Archival Research

Instructor: Linda Quirk (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description:  The moment of discovery and insight in an archive can be thrilling! But for many, the world of archives is a mysterious place and it is difficult to know where to begin when faced with boxes of documents, letters, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs. Prior to becoming a special collections librarian, I spent years of my life doing archival and bibliographical research in special collections and archives across Canada and the US, learning from staff, archivists, librarians, and my fellow researchers. I have learned that for most archival research, success depends to a great extent on the work that is done before ever setting foot in special collections or the archive, and that is the first of the many secrets that will be revealed in this workshop. Whether you are an undergrad student, a grad student, or a professor, if you are new to archival research then this workshop will give you the basics to get you started and open up a whole new world of primary research to you. This online workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 50 participants.

The website for Bruce Peel Special Collections offers detailed information about this series of workshops as well as information about research and exhibitions.
