Support Your Research with Numbers: How and Where to Find Data!

Support Your Research with Numbers: How and Where to Find Data!

The University of Alberta Library connects researchers with quantitative research data through various subscriptions and support services. This session will provide foundational information regarding where and how to find data for supporting research, teaching, and learning, as well as where to turn for assistance with data assignments and research activities.

Session participants will learn how to locate official statistics and microdata produced by governments, large research institutions, and fellow academic researchers. While this session may be of interest to researchers and students across disciplines, the primary focus will be on socio-economic quantitative microdata collected through large public surveys (e.g., the Canadian Census of Population, the General Social Survey, the Canadian Community Health Survey, etc) and information on how their resulting variable-level datasets can be obtained from large data archives such as Statistics Canada, ICPSR, Dataverse, and other Open Data sources.

There will be time at the end of the session for questions and discussion.

Anna Bombak has served as a University of Alberta Data Librarian for over 30 years, and as a member of the Digital Initiatives Data Team since 2012. Over the course of her career, Anna has worked with quantitative research data in ever-changing formats and on many hardware and software platforms, and has witnessed the explosive growth of "Data" as a subject specialty and mediated Library service. Despite this constant evolution of data delivery models, Anna believes the core role of data librarians remains unchanged: to understand and navigate these changes to better connect U of A researchers and students with the data they require to support their research.
