Peering into the Bookmaking World of Susan Allix

Peering into the Bookmaking World of Susan Allix

Instructor: Jeff Papineau (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description: Susan Allix has been making beautiful and inspiring books for more than half a century, drawing on her skills as an artist, papermaker, printmaker, typesetter, printer, and bookbinder. Her bookmaking process is quite remarkable because she is adept at performing so many specialized bookmaking techniques, from intaglio and relief printing to etching and binding, demonstrating an astonishing range of skills. Produced in small editions, Allix’s books are highly sought after by individual and institutional collectors, and the Peel library has a representative collection of the 77 titles that comprise her life’s work. Using examples from the collection, this workshop will demonstrate how Allix’s work combines elements of fine press books and artists’ books, exploring how images, text, materials, and colour are integrated to create brilliantly inventive books. This in-person workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 8 participants.
