Cryptic Mysteries and Literary Hoaxes

Cryptic Mysteries and Literary Hoaxes

Instructor: Linda Quirk (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description: The so-called "Voynitch manuscript" is a historic handwritten manuscript, encrypted from an unknown source language and filled with mysterious “other worldly” illustrations. Despite centuries of scholarly research–including significant work by an AI team at U of A  that attempted to identify the source language–it remains one of the great unsolved mysteries in the world of books. Workshop participants will learn more about the Voynitch manuscript alongside a selection of forgeries and literary hoaxes in an attempt to better understand why such mysteries are so challenging to unravel. This online workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 50 participants.

The website for Bruce Peel Special Collections offers detailed information about this series of workshops as well as information about research and exhibitions.
