Poison Books

Poison Books

Instructor: Carolyn Morgan (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description: Poison books have been in the news as of late, and many of the stories have tended to focus on one particular colour: emerald green. The problem is not a new one and emerald green is not the only toxic pigment that can be found in historic collections! The emerald green pigment is getting attention because it was widely used in Victorian-era homes and textiles, including in the fabric used to bind books. And what about the other toxins lurking on the shelves? Learn from Peel’s Conservator how one can safely identify potentially toxic books and what health and safety recommendations are currently utilised when poison books have been identified in historic collections. This online workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 50 participants.

The website for Bruce Peel Special Collections offers detailed information about this series of workshops as well as information about research and exhibitions.
