Jane Austen and Friends

Jane Austen and Friends

Instructor: Linda Quirk (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description: An enduringly popular writer, Jane Austen pioneered the use of literary romance to assert nineteenth-century feminist values in her major novels: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), and, published together in 1817, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. This small in-person workshop offers the opportunity for some of U of A's Janeites (i.e. Austen fans) to gather in the Peel classroom to examine first editions of Austen's novels, as well as those of some of her contemporaries, and to learn a little bit about the contexts in which these women were writing. This in-person workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 8 participants.

The website for Bruce Peel Special Collections offers detailed information about this series of workshops as well as information about research and exhibitions.
