Narrative and Storytelling in Artists’ Books

Narrative and Storytelling in Artists’ Books

Instructor: Jeff Papineau (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description: At the most basic level, artists’ books are works of art that are dependent upon the book structure to articulate their content. Assuming many different forms and shapes and reflecting a range of processes and techniques, both traditional and experimental, they create uniquely intimate and tangible space for connection and reflection. Whether the content is visually or linguistically based (often both), artists’ books employ elements of sequence, repetition, juxtaposition, and duration to create many exciting possibilities within narrative, media, and meaning, possibilities that are specific to the medium. This workshop will examine and reflect on these elements in a variety of works from the collection to explore the ways artists’ books create new and unexpected experiences in storytelling and narrative. This in-person workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 8 participants.
