Q&A with the Curators

Q&A with the Curators

Curators: Sarah Carter (History, Classics, & Religion; Native Studies) and Inez Lightning (History, Classics, & Religion); moderator Linda Quirk (Bruce Peel Special Collections). Description: Bruce Peel's in-house exhibition, Ancestors: Indigenous Peoples of Western Canada in Historic Photographs (September 2022—March 2023), showcases a collection of nineteenth-century photos of Indigenous peoples that were mostly photographed and labelled by non-Indigenous people for their own purposes. Such photographs offer valuable visual history, but existing print and digital resources can only go so far in helping us to interpret them. This workshop will offer a special opportunity to learn from the curators about the benefits and challenges of the research that they undertook by consulting with a number of Indigenous elders and knowledge keepers in order to learn the stories that these photographs tell. This online workshop is open only to the University of Alberta community and is capped at 30 participants.

The website for Bruce Peel Special Collections offers detailed information about this series of workshops as well as information about research and exhibitions.
