Wikipedia Speaker Series: Indigenizing Wikipedia

Wikipedia Speaker Series: Indigenizing Wikipedia

What does it mean to Indigenize Wikipedia, and how can people support this effort? It’s not only adding Indigenous content; it’s challenging the types and sources of knowledge valued on the site. Join Erin O'Neil, the University of Alberta Library's Wikipedian in Residence in conversation with Heather Steinhagen, organizer of Indigenize Wikipedia in Yukon, to discuss her community work bringing people together to improve the site with Indigenous content and ways of knowing, and explore other examples of Indigenization efforts on Wikipedia.

Homegrown from Whitehorse, Yukon, with German and Cowessess Nation roots, Heather Steinhagen is a practising artist and art educator. Although Heather hasn't grown up surrounded by her Cree First Nations culture, she embraced her culture and is always prepared to help others and share her knowledge through mentorship and program development. Heather has worked on projects such as Indigenize Wikipedia, the Red Dress project and the Emerging North exhibition. She is a trained facilitator for the Art of Managing your Career - Indigenous Perspectives and was the first Indigenous Executive Director for the Yukon Art Society.

Registration is required, but the talk is free and open to everyone.

Diving Deeper into Wikipedia Speaker Series: This fall, the Digital Scholarship Centre at the University of Alberta Library is hosting a series of talks to draw back the curtain on Wikipedia. There will be three-afternoon talks in the fall semester, offered online and recorded. The talks will be structured as a “fireside chat” between UAL’s Wikipedian in Residence and special guest speakers.
