How to stop worrying and learn to love peer observation

How to stop worrying and learn to love peer observation

Presenter: Annie Zeidman-Karpinski and Mary K. Oberlies
 Audience: Edmonton Library Community

The University of Oregon applied leading edge tools in evidence based practice for teaching STEM classes to library one shot classes. We found that we have a lot in common with teachers of large lectures in the sciences and some differences of opinion as well. We will discuss what worked from a nationally validated model and what we are in the process of changing and validating for library one off sessions. Fundamentally we are using these tools to build a culture of using peer observation as a method to improving student success. Because these changes are big and seem difficult to many, we are also incorporating another model, Teaching Squares. By adding this component we have built in a piece of the program that aids in reflection, mentoring and getting over the hurdle of being really, really worried about having others come to your instruction sessions.

Annie Zeidman-Karpinski loves being a librarian. She was a good reference librarian, and now brings the Reference Desk to the classroom. Her goal is to talk less and get the students doing more activities. Her fascination with studying many aspects of teaching is due to her abysmal classroom performance as a young graduate student and new librarian. She has a Masters of Library and Information Science from UCLA and a Masters degree in geography from Rutgers University. She got her undergraduate degree at Oberlin College. She loves living, running and eating in Eugene, Oregon with her husband, two kids (one is a teen, the other is a tween) and a very active young dog.

Mary K. Oberlies is a teacher at heart. As someone who started her career feeling lost as an instructor, she loves helping librarians gain skills and develop networks to feel more comfortable with their teaching. Recently she has been exploring the role our identities and personal epistemologies have on our instructional practices. Mary is the Undergraduate Engagement Librarian at the University of Oregon. She has a MAIS from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a MA in Violence, Terrorism, and Security from Queen’s University at Belfast and a BA in International Studies from Berry College. Away from work she can often be found at a pottery studio or researching topics in security studies.
