Wikipedia Speaker Series: Public accountability & transparency in Wikipedia

Wikipedia Speaker Series: Public accountability & transparency in Wikipedia

Wikipedia is built on principles of community accountability; anyone can edit or challenge another editor's work. But on English Wikipedia, the majority of editors are white men. How does it affect accountability and transparency when the community seeking that accountability is steeped with a colonial, patriarchal, and white supremacist view of the world? Join Erin O’Neil, the University of Alberta Library's Wikipedian in Residence in conversation with Dr. Hannah McGregor, Assistant Professor in Publishing at Simon Fraser University, to discuss her work on public accountability in digital media and contemplate these issues in relation to Wikipedia.

Registration is required, but the talk is free and open to everyone.

Biography

Dr. Hannah McGregor is an Assistant Professor of Publishing at Simon Fraser University, where her research focuses on podcasting as scholarly communication, systemic barriers to access in the Canadian publishing industry, and magazines as middlebrow media. She is the co-creator of Witch, Please, a feminist podcast on the Harry Potter world; the host of The SpokenWeb Podcast, a collaborative research-creation podcast; and the creator of the podcast Secret Feminist Agenda, which is currently undergoing an experimental peer review process with Wilfrid Laurier University Press. She is also the co-editor of the book Refuse: CanLit in Ruins (Book*hug 2018).

Diving Deeper into Wikipedia Speaker Series

This fall, the Digital Scholarship Centre at the University of Alberta Library is hosting a series of talks to draw back the curtain on Wikipedia. There will be three-afternoon talks in the fall semester, offered online and recorded. The talks will be structured as a “fireside chat” between UAL’s Wikipedian in Residence and special guest speakers. Wikimedia Canada logo
