3D Design Basics
3D modelling has become a common practice and a necessary part of learning in fields such as engineering, medicine, architecture and industrial and textile design. In most cases, designs are used for the fabrication or rendering of lifelike models that help to better plan real-world projects. In other cases, 3D design is used in developing virtual environments used as educational tools, games, and for various purposes in the entertainment industry.
This workshop will cover foundational skills for creating models in a 3D environment and how this process differs from designing in 2D. It will introduce users to two software platforms (Blender and Rhino 7) and give them a starting point to develop their own 3D models. The workshop will also provide participants with tools for their learning, including information on digital scholarship services related to 3D printing and the VR studio.
This workshop is being offered as a Hybrid Event. Online participants are urged to register. The in-person workshop will be held at the Sperber Library Teaching and Learning Lab in ECHA.
What the participants need: Demos of two different 3D design applications (Blender / Rhino 8 Offers a 3-month free trial) will be offered in this workshop. Participants who wish to follow along are welcome to bring a laptop and install the the programs - but this is not necessary to participate in the workshop.
Completion of this workshop can contribute to a partial requirement of the University of Alberta Professional Development program by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS). Information on how attendance will be recorded will be discussed in the workshop.
